Using IPE HARDWOOD for building Docks & Related Outdoor Structures
IPE HARDWOOD DOCK
In 2006 we introduced IPE (pronounced ee-pay) to our material options lineup. IPE is a Brazilian hardwood harvested from naturally sustainable forests. IPE, also known as "Ironwood", resists rot, decay, insects, and mold without the use of chemicals. It is naturally fire resistant. It's top ratings for strength, hardness and durability have been proven again and again in demanding commercial applications, like the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. So strong, dense, and hard, IPE remains smooth and virtually splinter free for years and years.
Weather has little to no effect upon the structural integrity of IPÊ wood. The sun will eventually transform the wood from it's original reddish-brown to a beautiful silver patina. This product can also be sealed annually to preserve is rich dark finish. The materials cost for IPE can be very much compared to a composite material. The density of IPE requires that we pre-drill before screwing, this extra step adds a little to our labor costs. |
